The Logan girls basketball team notched two victories at the Coronado Tournament at Gallina, including a 68-11 trouncing of the host team on Saturday.
Logan coach Dustin Robertson praised the tournament hosts and its facility “in a beautiful area of the state.”
“We used the weekend for bringing our team together,” he said. “We had a great time.”
Logan (10-7) led 13-4 after the first quarter against Coronado and essentially put the game away by scoring 25 unanswered points in the second period.
Desta Rose led the Lady Longhorns with a team-high 22 points, seven assists and five steals. Marilyn Moreno added 18 points.
The Leopards fell to 4-9.
The Lady Longhorns host Vega (Texas) on Tuesday, travel to Texico on Thursday and host their district opener Saturday against defending state champ Fort Sumner.
Logan 58, Walatowa 12
The Lady Longhorns blasted Walatowa Charter of Jemez Pueblo by a 58-12 score Thursday in the first day of the Coronado Tournament.
Logan jumped to leads of 19-2 after the first quarter and 40-3 at intermission.
Rose led the Lady Longhorns with 24 points and added five steals. Presley Griffitt led Logan with nine rebounds, and Moreno added nine points and a team-high seven steals.
The Cougars fell to 1-3.
Melrose 43, Logan 41
In a close battle of longtime rivals, Melrose prevailed over Logan 43-41 during a non-district clash on Jan. 20.
Melrose’s Skyla Wicker scored the go-ahead basket with 25 seconds left, and the Lady Buffs fended off Logan’s 3-point try at the buzzer.
Robertson said his Lady Longhorns had their opportunities for a victory.
“It was a back-and-forth game,” Robertson said. “If we made more of our free throws, we win. If we made more our our shots and layups around the basket, we win.”
Logan went 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Moreno led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points and seven rebounds. Rose added 10 points and five steals.
Chantzee Elliott led Melrose with 15 points.
Melrose, ranked fourth in Class 1A, improved to 11-2.
