Over 50 attend Quay Day at state capital

The state's tourism director gave the keynote speech to more than 50 attendees at the annual Quay Day breakfast Wednesday in Santa Fe.

The event at Hotel Santa Fe gave local government entities and businesses an opportunity to mingle with state officials as the New Mexico Legislature began its annual session.

Lancing Adams, acting Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Tourism, gave a presentation about tourism opportunities.

Among the elected state officials who attended Quay Day were state Sen. Pat Woods (R-Broadview) and state Rep. Jack Chatfield (R-Mosquero).

Also attending were former Logan Municipal Schools superintendent Dennis Roch, now chief of staff for the New Mexico Senate Republicans; and Bob Salazar, an aide for Democratic U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez.

Officials from Mesalands Community College, Quay County government, City of Tucumcari, Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce, Village of San Jon, New Mexico Department of Economic Development, Xcel Energy, Tucumcari Bio-Energy, Eastern Plains Council of Governments and Rex E. Kirksey Agricultural Science Center in Tucumcari also attended.

The chamber, EPCOG, Tucumcari MainStreet, Quay County, Greater Tucumcari Economic Development Corp. and City of Tucumcari sponsored Quay Day.

The chamber also distributed 130 goodie bags, sponsored by the Tucumcari Rotary Club, to state legislators that contained cheese from Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Factory and items from Mesalands Community College, Tucumcari MainStreet, Film Tucumcari, City of Tucumcari and the Quay County Health Council.

The previous day featured Tourism Day at the Capitol, with a Route 66 centennial booth sponsored by the Route 66 Centennial Stakeholders Group. The cities of Tucumcari and Santa Rosa shared booth space to market their communities for Route 66's centennial in 2026.
