Logan girls prevail against Estancia

Leading Estancia by just four points at intermission, the Logan girls basketball team outscored their opponent 29-18 in the second half to secure a 48-33 victory Saturday at Logan.

The Lady Longhorns rallied to a double-digit lead halfway through the fourth quarter and built on it.

Logan coach Dustin Robertson said his team won despite a suboptimal performance.

“We played a little bit flat,” he said. “The girls were going hard but just never could get rolling very good.

“But they continued to fight and play with maturity and got the win. I was proud of the way they played smart and with poise to get it done, though it wasn’t pretty.”

Desta Rose led the Lady Longhorns with 24 points.

Logan, ranked 10th in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, improved to 7-6.

Estancia, which competes in Class 2A, fell to 8-6.

Corona-Vaughn 59, Logan 47

The Lady Longhorns claimed an early double-digit lead, but they couldn’t hold it against 6-foot-6 Harper Dunn and her Corona-Vaughn teammates during a 59-47 loss Friday at Corona.

Logan grabbed an 18-7 lead after the first quarter, but the Cardinals outscored their foe 40-16 in the second and third periods to wrest back control.

Robertson said all the defensive attention given to Dunn created opportunities for her teammates.

“Our game plan was obviously geared toward her, and they did a nice job of exploiting holes we were leaving at other spots on the court,” he said. “She’s a problem, for sure.”

Dunn finished with 32 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Dunn, a sophomore, is one of the most heavily recruited athletes in New Mexico, drawing attention from Division I powerhouses in women’s basketball.

Rose totaled 18 points, five assists and five steals for Logan. Marilyn Moreno added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Longhorns.

Corona, ranked eighth in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, improved to 7-2.

Logan 53, Dora 51

Trailing by four points late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Longhorns rallied to a 53-51 victory over visiting Dora on Thursday.

Rose, who paced Logan with a team-high 24 points, led the charge with a steal and a bucket, then scored the go-ahead basket after an offensive rebound with less than a minute left.

Reese Hastie also made two free throws to tie it for the Lady Longhorns with 1:11 remaining.

The Coyotes had two opportunities in the last minute to tie or take the lead, but they failed to convert.

Robertson said defense was the key to the victory.

“We had some timely steals that helped us get back in it and put us up,” he said. “The girls were talking well on defense and really trusting each other on both ends of the court.”

Rose also led the team with eight rebounds and nine steals. Moreno added 10 points and five steals, and Sadie Bruhn made seven steals.

Dora fell to 5-6.

Floyd 40, San Jon 29

San Jon cut Floyd’s lead to two points in the fourth quarter, but the host Broncos closed the game with a 10-1 run to win it 40-29 during a game on Jan. 14.

Dakota Fisher led the visiting Lady Coyotes with 14 points.

Floyd improved to 3-7.
