Serving the High Plains
Local basketball fans can only speculate how the No. 1-ranked Logan boys basketball team would have done at the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference Tournament, better known as EPAC.
Last week’s annual eastern New Mexico tournament, scheduled to be hosted by Texico this year, was postponed, then canceled after a snowstorm rolled through the region on Thursday and caused hazardous driving conditions through much of Friday. The Clovis region received about six inches of snow.
“Stay safe and warm, and we’ll see you at EPAC next year!” organizers stated in a text message that announced the tournament’s cancellation on Friday morning.
The Longhorns (9-0), top-ranked in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, were the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Host Texico (9-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, was the top seed.
Other teams in the tournament were the perennially strong Melrose (7-2) and Fort Sumner (12-1), along with Floyd, Grady, Elida and Dora.
In the girls tournament, defending Class 1A champion Fort Sumner (10-2) was the top seed, with Texico (6-3) seeded second. Logan (6-5) was seeded fourth.
Grady boys 68, San Jon 2
The San Jon boys team scored only once — during the second quarter — in a 68-2 loss on Jan. 6 at Grady.
The host Bronchos led 9-0 after the first quarter and 34-2 at intermission. Trey Rush led Grady with 19 points.
San Jon fell to 0-10. Grady improved to 6-5.
