The Logan girls basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit against visiting Des Moines and rallied for a 58-46 victory on Saturday.
The Lady Longhorns trailed 32-21 at halftime but finished the third quarter with a 15-4 run, slicing the Lady Demons’ lead to 39-38.
Logan continued the onslaught early in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-1 run to grab a 51-40 lead midway through the period. Des Moines never threatened after that.
“Our defensive energy got more intense,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said of the rally. “For us, that’s the formula to get us going.”
Desta Rose led Logan with 25 points. Baylee Jones-Salvador added 11 points, including three 3-pointers during the crucial fourth-quarter run. Presley Griffitt grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Logan, winning its third in a row, improved to 6-5. Des Moines fell to 5-3.
Logan 53, Clayton 28
The Lady Longhorns cruised to a 53-28 victory over visiting Clayton on Friday.
Logan led 26-11 at intermission and 40-20 after three quarters.
“It was a good win against a hard-working, young team,” Robertson said.
Rose scored 23 points, made four assists and grabbed six rebounds to lead Logan. Nine other teammates scored against the Yellowjackets.
Sadie Bruhn also made a team-high seven steals and three assists for the Lady Longhorns.
“Sadie continues to get better and better on a weekly basis,” Robertson said. “She plays tough at all times and is stepping up in all areas of her game.”
Clayton fell to 4-7.
Logan 59, Zuni 25
The Lady Longhorns broke open a close game with a 19-2 scoring run in the second half during a 59-25 win Thursday over Zuni at the Lady Rattler Invitational tournament.
Logan led just 22-19 at halftime but got its defense and transition games humming in the second half. The Lady Longhorns led 39-21 after three quarters and took a 20-point lead early in the fourth period.
“We shot pretty well and got a lot of layups off of steals,” Robertson said. “We finished a lot better than in the first half.”
He also praised his bench for stepping up in the absence of Marilyn Moreno, who was out of town visiting family in Oregon, and Peyton Merrill, sidelined with a knee injury.
“Everyone made the most of their minutes,” he said.
Rose led Logan with 26 points and six rebounds. Reese Hastie added 12 points. Griffitt and Bruhn grabbed six rebounds each.
Logan played only one game at the tournament as a fill-in for the opening-day bracket.
Zuni fell to 2-5.
San Jon 33, Floyd 19
The San Jon girls team improved to 4-4 on the season with a 33-19 victory Friday at Floyd.
The Lady Coyotes sealed the victory by outscoring the Broncos 20-8 in the second half.
Alexa Bacerra led San Jon with 13 points, and eighth-grader Jayden Lawrence added eight points.
Floyd fell to 2-6.
