1975: Two Tucumcari police officers stepped down from the force after facing accusations of misconduct involving four residents on New Year’s Eve.

Police Chief Jim Santillan said the two submitted their resignations, and two other officers were reprimanded and their probationary periods extended.

District Attorney Norman Runyan said his office was weighing charges of aggravated battery and negligent use of firearms against the two resigned officers.

According to a report, one of the officers during a traffic stop fired three shots from his pistol, with one of the bullets striking a street lamp on First Street.

An officer then punched and kicked one of the juveniles.

A report stated one of the cops was “very intoxicated,” and he had been drinking alcohol earlier that day at a friend’s apartment.
