1974: Delegates for the New Mexico Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to recognize four churches as historic sites, including one in Amistad.
The Amistad United Methodist Church was built in 1909 — one of the last buildings in the dwindling town. Amistad only had a post office, a school, a grocery store and a service station, along with a few families.
The church also hosted its annual Amistad Thanksgiving Homecoming, where an estimated 100 former residents attended, including those from California and Colorado.
The church hosted its first Thanksgiving gathering in 1969.
