Area spikers lift Red All-Stars to victory

Two area players played big roles in their team's four-set victory Saturday at the annual 1A/2A Red-Green All-Star Volleyball Game organized by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

Logan senior setter and middle blocker Haylie Bidegain notched 13 kills and three blocks and Tucumcari senior setter Caylee Benavidez totaled 18 assists and five kills in the Red team's 21-25, 25-21, 25-9, 25-19 victory over the Green All-Stars.

The match was played at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque.

"Both girls from Quay County played strong in their positions," Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez, who also is Caylee's mother, said after attending the match.

"Everyone looked good. Both girls played well," Logan coach Glynna Strand said.

Bidegain's and Benavidez's teams played deep into their respective state tournaments, and both were first-team all-district selections. (See other stories in this edition.)
