1974: The City of Tucumcari was working to catch up to and correct September utility billings by late November.

It would initiate October billings in December. The city stated it would not receive a utility bill with several months consolidated, “but it is imperative the city catch up with the billing at some point in time. This will not be done until after Christmas.”

No late charges would be assessed until the billing cycle is corrected. Any overcharges would be corrected in the February billing.

— An officer from the Fort Bliss 41st Ordnance Detachment presided over a Bomb Threat Class, including how to search for a bomb and what to do if an explosive device is found in a building. Officials from Tucumcari Police, Quay County Sheriff’s Office, San Jon, Trigg Memorial Hospital and local banks attended.

— Ignacio Martinez, originally from Yuma, Arizona, took over the management of the Holiday Inn on the east end of Tucumcari. He said he planned to add entertainment at the hotel and complete some remodeling next month.

— Nancy Kaufman and Barbara Dow of the Xi Beta Theta sorority presented a $150 check to Tucumcari High School wrestling coach Pat Lujan to buy new uniforms.

— Texas Rangers outfielder Jeff Burroughs was voted the Most Valuable Player of the American League. Burroughs, 23, was the third-youngest player to win the award.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “Don’t Turn the Other Cheek,” starring Eli Wallach, Lynn Redgrave and Franco Nero.
