Lady Longhorns nab No. 1 seed in tourney

Powered by their second straight district championship, the Logan volleyball squad on Sunday secured a No. 1 seed in this week’s Class 1A tournament.

The Lady Longhorns (19-4), which earned a first-round bye, will play the winner of the Grady-Pine Hill matchup at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland High School.

Logan coach Glynna Strand said of her team’s district crown and high seed that she was “just proud of my team and their hard work.”

Logan is in the same bracket as No. 4-seed and longtime area rival Melrose (17-6).

In the other bracket is No. 2-seeded Gateway Christian (20-3) and third-seeded Quemado (20-3).

The Class 1A semifinals are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rio Rancho Events Center, with the championship at 4 p.m. that day.

Logan 3, Grady 1

The Lady Longhorns wrapped up a perfect district schedule Saturday with a 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 victory at Grady.

Logan finished with a 6-0 record in district play and won 10 of their last 11 matches.

Grady finished the regular season with a 15-7 record and 2-4 in district play.

Logan 3, Fort Sumner 1

Logan captured the district championship Thursday with a 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 25-23 victory over visiting Fort Sumner.

The Vixens (13-9) finished runner-up in the district standings with a 4-2 mark.

Fort Sumner 3, San Jon 0

San Jon finished the season with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 loss Friday at Fort Sumner.

The Lady Coyotes ended the year with a 5-15 record overall, 0-6 in district play.
