1974: Tucumcari Public Schools was hosting the ninth annual National Career Guidance Week.

The theme, “Plug Into Life — Experience the Future,” emphasizes career development as a continuous and changing process.

National Career Guidance Week is sponsored by the National Vocational Guidance Association. Members of the association at Tucumcari schools are counselors Ross Brush, Sylvia York, Gene Wheeler and John Roberts.

— Lt. Col. Richard Reid was promoted to full colonel and appointed chief of staff to the New Mexico National Guard. Reid had commanded the 4th ADA Battalion, with its headquarters in Tucumcari, until his promotion.

— Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey won the Most Valuable Player award in the National League, easily outdistancing runner-up Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals despite Brock stealing a record 118 bases.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “Free As the Wind,” an adventure story of a family that adopted a pack of timber wolves.

— Gambles furniture outlet in Tucumcari was offering a rocker easy chair for $58 and free gifts to the first 50 adults in the store.
