Shots fired at two TPD officers

Two Tucumcari police officers were uninjured when someone began shooting at them as they investigated an apparent arson early Thursday.

Sgt. Lorenzo Emillio and Patrolman Jesse Ray were dispatched to the 1500 block of West Tucumcari Boulevard about midnight Wednesday to check on a report of property being burned across from the Tucumcari Convention Center.

While working the scene, an unknown person began shooting at them, Police Chief Patti Lopez said. The officers didn’t return fire because the shooter couldn’t be seen.

“They heard (the bullets) whizzing by,” Lopez said. “We’re super-grateful those people were terrible shots. We’re very lucky.”

Lopez said the officers weren’t hurt, and the bullets didn’t strike their vehicles.

Anyone with information abut the shooting should call Quay County Crime Stoppers at (575) 461-3507. Information leading to an arrest could result in a reward of up to $1,000. Callers can remain anonymous.
