1974: Tucumcari Recreation Director Dan Barks was honored by friends during a dinner at the Sheraton Inn.

Despite pain in his knees during his trek, Barks had recently completed a 75-hour walk to help raise funds for improvements to city parks.

A total of $1,400 had been raised, with more money coming in.

The Tucumcari Jaycees added another $150 to the fund, and more money was being collected during the dinner.

— Muhammad Ali knocked out titleholder George Foreman in the eighth round in Zaire. Ali became only the second heavyweight boxer to regain his crown; he had his title stripped from him in 1967 for refusing his induction into the armed forces.

— Former president Richard Nixon was in critical condition from internal bleeding and shock after surgery to treat a blood clot in his pelvis. Nixon survived the ordeal, but spent months in the hospital and in convalescence.

— An robber, armed with a German Lugar pistol, stole $400 in a money bag from the Morning Glory Grocery in Tucumcari.

— The local Kentucky Fried Chicken was offering two pieces of chicken, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy and a roll for $1.39.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “The Great Gatsby,” starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
