Serving the High Plains
Tucumcari senior runner Alex Bueno De La O finished first overall while Logan’s boys and girls squads captured team titles during a six-team meet Monday morning at the 12 Shores Golf Club.
Complete results weren’t available before press time, but THS coach Tim Clark said Bueno De La O finished the 3.12-mile course in about 18 minutes, 30 seconds.
Teammate Fernando Ureste finished about 10 seconds behind Bueno De La O for runner-up.
“We did good,” Clark said. “It was nice to come to a meet close to home.”
Also for Tucumcari, Bryson Klinger finished 15th and Patric Szaloy 16th.
The Longhorns, using their considerable depth, breezed to the team title.
In the girls race, Logan’s Lilly Nials finished first while pacing the Lady Longhorns squad to a team title.
For Tucumcari, Heaven Maes-Arellano finished fifth overall. Teammates Ashlynn Box finished ninth and MiKayla Klinger 10th.
Cimarron meet
Bueno De La O finished third overall during the 11-team Barbara Martinez Memorial cross-country meet Saturday at Cimarron.
He finished the 5,000-meter course at the Cimarron High School track in about 16:50.
Clark said his senior probably could have run even better on the 2 1/2-mile loop.
“Alex said he miscalculated,” Clark said. “He thought it was a bit more and didn’t make his move fast enough.”
Ureste finished fifth in a time of about 17:09. Szaloy finished 21st.
Other THS runners were Smith and Klinger, but their places and times were not available at press time.
Clark said Maes-Arellano finished 12th in the girls race, but a time wasn’t available.
Tucumcari’s runners have the week off until they compete on Oct. 19 at the Academy Extravaganza at Albuquerque Academy, which serves as a preview of the state meet at Academy in early November.
