1974: Barton Jones and Craig Cosner of the First National Bank of Tucumcari gave a new film projector to the Diamond Backers sports booster club during its weekly meeting.

Bob Balch, president of the booster club who accepted the projector, said it would be used to show film of the previous Rattlers football game each week to help point out mistakes and good plays.

The Diamond Backers also voted to send a $25 check to the Canyon (Texas) Booster Club to help Kelly Forehand, a football player seriously injured in a game.

Forehand will be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life, according to doctors. A special fund was set up to help defray Forehand’s medical costs.

— Despite trouble with both knees, Tucumcari parks director Dan Barks still was trudging along in his quest to walk nonstop for 75 hours. He said pain in his right knee was “very bad” and thought he might have to cut his walk short.

Barks managed to complete his walk. His goal was to raise $3,000 for park equipment.

— The Safeway market was advertising ground beef for 89 cents a pound, chuck roast for 68 cents a pound, round steak for $1.29 a pound and sliced bacon for 99 cents a pound.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening the Charles Bronson thriller “Mr. Majestyk.”
