Logan steamrolls Floyd 52-0 in six-man football

Logan stayed undefeated in six-man football by rolling over district foe Floyd 52-0 in a road game on Friday.

The Longhorns (6-0) led 46-0 at halftime and ended the game by the mercy rule midway through the third quarter.

Logan, ranked No. 1 in the New Mexico’s six-man division, remained atop its district with a 4-0 mark.

Floyd fell to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in district play.

Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said he played his starters for only two series against the overmatched Broncos.

“It was a good game to get a lot of kids some playing time,” he said.

The Broncos hurt their cause with three turnovers, including two returned by the Longhorns for touchdowns. Logan converted another turnover into a third TD.

Logan quarterback Aydin Kotara threw for three touchdowns and scored another TD on an interception return. Mason Wallin converted on five of six kicks for two-point conversions.

Logan scored less than a minute into the game when running back Stratton Schoonover scampered for a 33-yard touchdown.

Kotara followed with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jace Jackson for a 16-0 lead.

On the ensuring kickoff, a Floyd returner inexplicably let the deep kick bounce past him near the sideline. An alert Logan player recovered the kick at Floyd’s 8-yard line.

That led to Kotara throwing his second TD pass, an 11-yarder to Mason Wallin, for a 24-0 lead.

Logan made it 32-0 when Kotara threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Nate Romero.

Schoonover scored on a 6-yard touchdown run for a 38-0 advantage.

On defense, Kotara read the Floyd quarterback’s sideline pass perfectly, stepped in front of the intended receiver, catch the ball and returned the interception 17 yards for a touchdown and a 46-0 lead late in the second period.

In the third quarter, Logan’s Haden Judd scooped up a Floyd fumble and returned it 33 yards for a TD, ending the game.

The Longhorns travel to Holy Cross in Midland, Texas, in for a non-district matchup at 7:30 p.m. local time Friday. It is Holy Cross’ homecoming.

The Crusaders (3-2), which play in the Texas Association of Private & Parochial Schools, blasted Grandfalls-Royalty 66-21 on Friday.
