Tucumcari man goes to prison for fentanyl trafficking

A Tucumcari man who shot another man at the Quay Apartments in December and found with dozens of fentanyl pills will go to prison for about four years after he was sentenced last week as part of a plea agreement.

George J. Olguin Sr., 62, pleaded guilty in August to trafficking of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony. According to court documents, Olguin possessed about 100 fentanyl pills at the time of his arrest.

Other charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence, receiving stolen property and receipt, transportation or possession of a firearm or destructive device by a certain persons were dismissed as part of the plea deal.

District Judge Abigail Aragon sentenced Olguin to nine years in the Department of Corrections, with 50% of that time deducted plus 284 days of jail credit since his arrest.

Olguin was ordered to report to the Quay County Detention Center on Oct. 7 so he could get his affairs in order. He was on a medical furlough due to a hernia surgery but wore an ankle monitor during his release.

District Attorney Heidi Adams had requested nine years in prison, noting Olguin’s rehabilitation from previous crimes “obviously failed.”

Olguin’s public defender, Brett Phelps, had requested five years of probation and a suspended sentence, noting he had successfully completed another probation from 2017 to 2022 and has ties to family and friends in the community.

According to police reports, Olguin shot Joshua Neal of Tucumcari in the abdomen during a confrontation at Olguin’s apartment. Police found the fentanyl pills while executing a search warrant of his apartment.
