1974: The members of the Community Alliance for Progress and Growth during a meeting at the Tucumcari Recreation Center said they would work to defeat an Oct. 15 recall election against five city commissioners after they earlier asked all of them to resign.
Three commissioners had agreed to resign if all five did it together. However, King Aitken and Johnny Crespin refused.
With that, the alliance said it wanted to vote down the recall.
Stephen Bowen, who chaired the meeting, said a successful recall would damage Tucumcari’s reputation for a stable government and damage the city’s credit rating.
— The Tucumcari Community Concert Association announced a membership campaign drive. The association planned to book pianist Stan Freeman, folk musicians Longstreth & Escosa and “explorers in sound” Addiss & Crofut for the 1974-75 season.
— It was election season, which meant a scheduled visit at the Pow Wow Patio by gubernatorial candidate Joe Skeen, plus Robert F. Jones, GOP candidate for the Corporation Commission, visiting the Tucumcari News.
— Gilbert Romero won the inaugural Super Star Tournament, where youths competed in tennis, field goal kicking, pool, free throw shooting, chess, golf and horseshoes. He totaled 35 1/2 points. Mickey Trousdale finished runner-up with 28 points, followed by Paul Quintana with 27.
— The Odeon Theatre was showing two Walt Disney Productions films, “The Castaway Cowboy” and “The Absent-Minded Professor.”
