Two THS runners finish in top 10 at Amarillo

Two Tucumcari cross-country runners finished in the top 10 on Saturday at the Amarillo ISD Invitational.

Alex Bueno De La O finished fourth overall on the 5,000-meter course at Rick Klein Park in Amarillo in a time of 17 minutes, 14 seconds.

His teammate, Fernando Ureste, finished sixth in a time of 17:16, said THS coach Tim Clark.

“For Alex and Fernando to be near the top, they were smokin’,” Clark said.

“Everyone ran well. They all improved their personal records.”

Full results from the meet weren’t available. Nearly 30 teams competed.

Clark said Patric Szaloy finished in the 22-minute range, and Paxton Smith finished in around 24 minutes.

Clark said the Rattlers didn’t field a full team because Bryson Klinger was sidelined due to a hip injury. Clark said he might recruit another younger runner to the varsity level so he can have a full squad before the district meet next month.

In the girls race, Clark said he again was struck by Heaven Maes-Arellano’s effort.

“Every day, I’m impressed with that young lady,” he said.

MiKayla Klinger also ran for the first time in several weeks after competing in various competitions at the New Mexico State Fair.

THS’ runners will be at Saturday’s Quay County on the Move 5K in Tucumcari, which isn’t an official competition but serves as a workout event.
