What appeared to be an even matchup on paper turned into a dominating 50-0 victory by Logan over visiting district foe Elida on Friday in six-man football.
Elida and Logan both were 4-0 overall and 2-0 in district play going into the game. Elida had outscored its opponents 246-46 before Friday.
But the Longhorns grabbed a 16-0 lead after one quarter and held a 30-0 advantage at intermission.
Logan ended the game by the mercy rule midway through the fourth quarter.
“The boys played a great game,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said. “We had a few penalties that stalled out some drives and extended some of their drives.
“All in all, it was a good game and was glad to see the offense get going a little quicker this week.”
The victory vaulted Logan into sole possession of first place in its district with a 3-0 record. Everyone else, including defending state champ Roy-Mosquero, has suffered at least one loss.
Grady, which suffered a loss in overtime to Logan on Sept. 6, downed Roy-Mosquero 28-16 on Friday.
Longhorns running back Haden Judd ran for touchdowns of 31, 34 and 35 yards during the contest. Aydin Kotara passed for three more scores for Logan.
A key moment for the Longhorns was when the Tigers had the ball inside Logan’s 10-yard line late in the second quarter. Logan was leading 16-0, but Elida seemed poised to trim that in half.
Instead, Longhorns defender Payson Nials picked off an Elida pass near the goal line and returned it all the way back for an 80-yard touchdown return, giving Logan a 24-0 lead with 2 1/2 minutes left in the half.
The Longhorns began the game with Kotara throwing a short pass to Stratton Schoonover, who weaved through the Elida defense for a 24-yard touchdown.
Mason Wallin kicked the PAT for an 8-0 lead. Wallin made four kicks after touchdowns during the game.
Late in the first period, Kotara threw to Jace Jackson for a 37-yard touchdown. Wallin kicked the PAT to make it 16-0.
Marshall Ortega caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Kotara for a 36-0 lead late in the third quarter.
Logan next travels to Floyd for a 1 p.m. Friday district game.
Floyd edged non-district opponent Carrizozo 33-26 on Thursday for its first victory of the season. The Broncos improved to 1-3 overall and are 0-3 in district play.
