The Logan volleyball team went 2-1 during the rugged Anna Archuleta Memorial Volleyball Tournament in Cimarron on Friday and Saturday, losing only to Class 3A foe Santa Fe Prep in the final.
The Lady Longhorns (9-3), ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, conquered Quemado and Raton during the tournament, both which were ranked in the top 10 of their respective divisions.
Santa Fe Prep emerged victorious in the championship by defeating Logan 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23.
Logan’s Haylie Bidegain, who was named to the all-tournament team, totaled a team-high 20 kills against Santa Fe Prep.
Makinlee Judd added 10 kills and Desta Rose seven. Charli Fuller made 26 assists and Jadyn Garcia 21 digs.
“We missed a lot of served and didn’t have our best game,” Logan coach Glynna Strand said. “Girls fought hard, though, and Santa Fe has a big presence at the net.”
The Blue Griffins improved to 8-2 and are ranked eighth in Class 3A by MaxPreps.
In the semifinal Saturday, the Lady Longhorns rallied past Quemado 25-22, 25-17, 26-24.
Bidegain made 14 kills during the match, Fuller totaled 20 assists, and Rose made 14 digs.
Quemado, ranked ninth in Class 1A, finished the weekend with a 6-3 record.
In the opening round of the tourney Friday, Logan defeated Raton 25-20, 25-17, 25-23.
Bidegan led the team with 18 kills, while Rose added 13. Fuller totaled 24 assists, and Garcia made 16 digs.
Raton, ranked sixth in Class 2A, finished the weekend with a 6-2 mark.
THS splits two
Tucumcari split two matches Saturday in the Bronze bracket at the Santa Fe Indian School Tournament, losing to Gallup but defeating Newcomb.
In the consolation round against Newcomb, the Lady Rattlers prevailed 25-21, 25-16, 25-18. Tucumcari, ranked fourth in Class 2A by MaxPreps.com, improved to 9-3.
Caylee Benavides, who was named to the all-tournament team, totaled 11 service aces. Her younger sister, Cambree Benavidez, led the team with 11 kills.
THS coach Dana Benavidez said her team still is working through its new rotations in the wake of an ankle injury to starter July Lafferty, “but we are adjusting well.”
“Nevaeh Montoya stepped it up during the tournament,” she said. “Against Newcomb, Nevaeh was key in winning with 16 serve-receive passes and 17 digs.”
Newcomb fell to 1-7.
In the opening round, the Lady Rattlers fell to Class 4A foe Gallup by a score of 16-25, 19-25, 25-23, 14-25.
The Bengals improved to 7-5.
