Two of Tucumcari’s top runners shaved a full minute off their previous-best times Saturday during the Rattlers’ eighth-place finish at the Badger Run cross-country meet at Amarillo West College.
Alex Bueno De La O finished 19th overall in a time of 17 minutes, 30.7 seconds over the 5,000-meter course.
Fernando Ureste finished 20th with a time of 17:35.34.
THS coach Tim Clark said he was happy with the pair’s faster times and noted Ureste was leading his teammate during the first half of the race.
Other Tucumcari runners were Patric Szaloy (31st, 18:04.72) Bryson Klinger (88th, 21:15.93) and Paxton Smith (104th, 25:26.23).
Abdihafit Mohamed of Amarillo Palo Duro won the race in a time of 16:04.53, edging Dumas’ Nefi Moreno by four seconds.
Tucumcari finished with 206 team points in the 13-team meet. Dumas of Texas breezed to the team title with a dominating score of 23 points, more than 50 better than runner-up Perryton.
The San Jon boys finished last in the team standings with 375 points. Eli Clements was the Coyotes’ top runner, finishing 96th in 23:04.6.
Other San Jon runners were Nathaniel Erwin (101st, 24:40.18), Travis Lee (103rd, 25:15.95), Michael Urrea (105th, 25:40.88) and Luis Mendez (109th, 36:59.69).
Tucumcari didn’t bring a full girls team to the meet. Clark said Heaven Maes-Arellano competed, but results from her race weren’t available.
Tucumcari next will compete at the Amarillo Invitational on Saturday morning at Rick Klein Park North.
