1974: Alice King, the first lady of New Mexico, attended a luncheon in Tucumcari hosted by the Quay County Democratic Women as part of the organization’s monthly “Women in Politics” series.
King told the gathering that she added a sculpture and table of horseshoes made by Tucumcari resident Vernon Stanton when she oversaw the refurbishing of the governor’s mansion.
She and Gov. Bruce King have visited almost every community in New Mexico at lease once since he took office.
“Our door is always open,” she said.
Kim Bowen, recently crowned Miss Piñata, presented Alice King a “Happiness is Tucumcari” pin during the reception.
— Debbie Crawford of the Quay County 4-H Club won a blue ribbon for her knitted poncho in the needlecraft division at the New Mexico State Fair.
— Southwest Motors in Tucumcari offered an “extra clean” 1971 Ford Galaxie 500 for $1,495 and a one-owner 1970 Ford pickup truck for $1,695.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening Walt Disney Productions’ newest cartoon feature, “Robin Hood.”
