Tucumcari runner, Logan boys win at Raton/Maxwell Invite

Tucumcari boasted the top individual boys runner and Logan boasted the top boys team Saturday at the Raton/Maxwell Invitational cross-country meet.

Official results from the meet weren’t available before deadline.

THS senior Alex Bueno De La O finished the 3 miles on the Raton Golf Course in about 18 minutes, 50 seconds, according to his coach, Tim Clark.

His teammate, Fernando Ureste, finished seventh overall with a time of about 19:20.

Other Rattlers competing were Bryson Klinger, Patric Szaloy, Jaythen Urioste and Paxton Smith.

The Tucumcari boys team’s finish at the meet was unavailable.

Clark said Raton also will host the district meet in early November.

“It gave us an opportunity to see the course and see what it’s all about,” he said.

Clark said his runners liked the cooler weather at the far northern New Mexico site but also struggled a bit with its 6,500-foot elevation.

Clark said two of his girls runners were absent because they were competing at the New Mexico State Fair.

He said Heaven Maes-Arellano finished close to the top 10 overall.

“She is right there,” Clark said.

Other Lady Rattlers at the meet were Amaky Hernandez, Daniella Garcia and Rachel Mardo.

Tucumcari next competes Saturday at the Badger Run at the Amarillo College West Campus.

The Longhorns nabbed the team title in 11-team race.

Sarah Gudgell, co-coach of Logan cross country with Amy Terry, said the boys squad was “banged up” after a rugged football game Friday at Grady.

“You could tell they were tired, but they dug deep and gave it everything they had,” she said. “It was awesome to see them push through and come out on top.”

On the Logan boys team are Mitchell Wall, Lucas Barreras, Mason Barnhart, Devin Kotara, Christopher Lucero, Bill DeLuca, Kale Griffiths, Haden Judd, Payson Nials and Kaden Bongers.

Gudgell said the Logan girls team was short a few members due to a conflict with a volleyball tournament in Magdalena. She said they are “progressing with every meet, showing great potential.”

Lilly Nials finished seventh and Kyle Terry finished 10th for the Logan girls.
