1974: The inaugural Diaper Derby at Tucumcari’s Piñata Festival sparked more interest than expected and has become the biggest event scheduled this year.

Among the infants newly entered in the contest were Ramona Garcia, Kenneth John Baeza, Johnnie Curtis Welch, Rebecca Navarro, Kimberly Renee Ortiz, Sabrina Harrison, Heather Ann Gray, Diana Christine Valverde and Scott Lee McCorkill.

The Tucumcari News noted more entries had been received for the Diaper Derby, and more photos of the children would be published in future editions.

— The 60-piece U.S. Air Force Academy Symphonic Band was scheduled to perform a free show at the Tucumcari Recreation Center. Among the selections that will be performed will be “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin, songs from “Man from La Mancha,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and Neil Diamond’s “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” soundtrack.

— The Quay County Fair was scheduled for four days during the week. In addition to judging of cattle, swine, sheep, poultry and rabbits, the fair’s program of events included an Old Fiddler’s Contest, a dance and a pet show.

— The local grocery store was selling Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias. The first volume was 49 cents, with the second through 25th volumes going for $1.99 each.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “The Sugarland Express,” starring Goldie Hawn and Ben Johnson. Up next was “The Great American Cowboy.”
