The Logan High School football team began its first season in the six-man format with a 41-0 non-district victory Friday at Magdalena.
Kickoff was delayed for about 90 minutes because of lightning.
Statistics weren’t available, but Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said Aydin Kotara, Stratton Schoonover, Haden Judd and Mason Wallin each scored touchdowns for the Longhorns.
Roberts said another three touchdowns of over 80 yards were called back due to penalties.
“We looked like a team that’s just starting six-man football, but the more the game got going, we were looking better,” he said.
“The main thing is we played as a team,” Roberts added. “Everyone was really supportive of each other. It was a lot of fun.”
The Logan Municipal Schools board voted in December to move from eight-man football to six-man for at least two years because of declining participation in the sport.
Logan commanded a 26-0 lead at halftime.
“Defensively, we were really stout, really fast,” Roberts said.
Despite Magdalena’s loss, Roberts said he wouldn’t be surprised if the Steers win their district and qualify for the postseason, mainly due to the strength of its line play.
The Longhorns will have their home opener at 7 p.m. Friday against non-district foe Mountainair, which lost its season opener 53-26 to Grady, which is in Logan’s district.
