1974: Dr. Thomas Prescott, who purchased the former First National Bank Building and the closed Princess Theatre in downtown Tucumcari, announced he would use the properties for House of the Testaments, a permanent museum of art.
Forty of the paintings would depict the Old Testament of the Bible, and another 40 would depict the New Testament — all in the style of Dutch-born artist Jan Maters.
Each painting would have its own communication system where you push a button and hear the description and history of the artwork.
— Miss Union County Karen Lewis, the reigning 4-H Horse Show Queen, will relinquish her crown this week. Among the contestants are Laquhanna Stone of Quay County, Owida Crites of Union County, Kristy Stephenson of Roosevelt County, Gerye Weed of Otero County, Brenda Clark of McKinley County, Donna Boyd of De Baca County, Sissy Pound of Socorro County, Vickye Kidd of Eddy County, Denise Mitchell of Lea County, Lewli Kelso of Curry County and Cindy Lindsey of Bernalillo County.
— Carmel Cortez and Roy McDonald, two local 4-H members, won first place at the state driving contest at New Mexico State University.
— The Tucumcari All-Stars finished third at the state All-Stars baseball tournament. Tucumcari won its opener against Bayard 15-7, lost the second game to Bayard 8-6 and was eliminated by Albuquerque 6-5.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening the Mel Brooks western comedy, “Blazing Saddles,” starring Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn and Harvey Korman.
