1974: Tucumcari’s satellite campus of Eastern New Mexico University-High Plains Area Vocational-Technical School became a reality when 13 students began their Business Office Occupations (Secretarial) courses at the former Coronado Elementary School.
Students were set to attend classes six hours a day, five days a week, over a period of 44 weeks. Carolyn Leak was the instructor.
Students who enrolled were Gloria Gutierrez, Bertha Garcia, Martha Mendez, Gloria Salas, Karla Lopez, Debbie White, Katie Gutierrez, Dorothy Holmes, Polly Scott, Andy Bell, Ruth Schumacher, Patricia Plymel and Frances Shay.
— Tucumcari Municipal Swimming Pool was scheduled to open for the season on June 2 with free admission. After that, entry fees would be 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for children. Bus transportation to the pool included pick-up points at Granger School, the recreation center and community center.
— A two-car collision at Second Street and Tucumcari Boulevard sent a young boy to Trigg Memorial Hospital with injuries to his jaw and neck. One of the drivers was cited for failure to yield.
— Juan Dominguez of the Cooper’s Market pitched a no-hitter during a 31-0 victory over Tucumcari Industries in the Tucumcari Senior League. Cooper’s remained on top of the standings by one game over the Citizens Bank team.
— Hank Aaron hit a game-winning home run during the Atlanta Braves’ 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Counting World Series and All-Star Game homers, it brought his career total to 730 — the same as Babe Ruth’s.
