1974: President Richard Nixon’s lawyer said the White House would not hand over 11 Watergate-related audio tapes subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee but would offer a partial transcript of one of the tapes.

Nixon’s lawyer also refused a request to turn over 66 tapes related to contributions from International Telephone and Telegraph and milk producers.

Nixon, embroiled by the Watergate scandal, later would resign from office in August.

— Patricia Hearst told a hostage she joined the Symbionese Liberation Army because she didn’t think her wealthy family did all it could to meet her kidnappers’ demands, it was reported today. Hearst was set to be charged with kidnapping and other crimes as an alleged active terrorist of the SLA.

— The Masonic Lodge in Tucumcari held its annual Senior Boys Hamburger Fry. Three boys — Ronnie Stoner, Jimmie Fox and one who declined to give his name — were crowned champion eaters for consuming six hamburgers apiece.

— Richard McCarty and Yvonne Bruhn were named valedictorian and salutatorian respectively for the Class of 1974 at Logan High School.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.”
