Serving the High Plains
Tucumcari senior long-jumper Haisley Huffman came close to breaking the school record in that event but settled for first place instead during the six-team Tucumcari Quad meet at Rattler Stadium last Tuesday.
Huffman, a two-time Class 3A champion in the long jump, was hoping to surpass the THS record of 18 feet set by Sandy Fortner in 2002.
Huffman logged measured jumps of 18 feet, 5 inches and 18 feet, 8 inches but scratched during both attempts, thwarting her bid to break the school mark during her final meet at home.
Her one good jump - 17-5 - won the event by almost two feet.
Huffman, also a defending state champ in the triple jump, didn't compete Tuesday in that event. She already qualified for the state meet earlier in the season.
Huffman has three more chances to break the long-jump mark - the Wolverine Invitational at Texico on Tuesday, the district meet at Ruidoso on Friday and the state meet in Albuquerque on May 10.
The other winners for the Lady Rattlers at the meet were:
- July Lafferty, javelin, 100-2;
