1974: U.S. Energy chief William Simon said there would be enough gasoline for Americans to take their normal summer trips this year.
Simon said rapidly improving gasoline supplies from the Middle East were reaching the U.S. and that the situation was “nearly normal.”
Simon made his comments during an interview on NBC’s “Today Show.”
Fuel shortages had roiled the U.S. during the past winter, also leading to sharply higher prices at the pump.
— U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya said he expected the price of pinto beans to level off or even fall later this year if this year’s harvest is good. The senator from New Mexico said he looked into complaints about the price of pintos, and he attributed it to lower production in 1973 and higher demand.
— Joe Dominguez announced the second annual March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon would be on May 4. The route for the 10-mile walk would be announced later.
— The combined efforts of starters and second-stringers led the Tucumcari baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Santa Rosa. Tommy Darnell was the winning pitcher. Rudy Velasco hit a two-run single, and CJ Wiegel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
— Frankie Blea broke the Tucumcari High School record in the pole vault for the second straight week, this time clearing a height of 11 feet, 9 inches.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening a western film, “The Spikes Gang,” starring Lee Marvin and Gary Grimes.
