1974: High winds wreaked havoc on the region, leading to property damage and brush fires.
A big gust knocked over the press box of Rattler Stadium onto the reserved seating section. The stadium’s public-address system and some bleachers also were damaged.
Firefighters were called to put out a brush fire four miles south on Norton Road.
A brush fire also was reported in a hay stack behind the Sheraton Inn in Tucumcari.
Winds gusted up to 67 mph.
— A total of 18 candidates filed for county offices. James Knight, Becky Bryant, Edna Beasley and Bill Yates were running for sheriff, treasurer, assessor and District 2 county commissioner respectively.
— The brakes failed on a pickup truck owned by a Tucumcari resident, causing it to crash into the front of the Circle K store on Fifth Street. The accident caused considerable damage but no injuries.
— Robby Birch was one of the winners of Clayton Relays, completing the mile run in a time of 4:49.4. He also competed on Tucumcari’s winning mile relay team.
