1974: President Richard Nixon brushed aside a plea from a previously staunch Republican ally that he resign from office, vowing he will “stand and fight.”
Sen. James L. Buckley of New York urged Nixon to resign “as an extraordinary act of statesmanship and courage” so the country could emerge from “the Watergate swamp.”
Nixon refused again to turn over 42 audiotapes to the House Judiciary Committee that the panel wants for its impeachment inquiry.
Nixon would step down from office in August.
— The House school gymnasium was hosting the Country Jamboree, with food served by the Floyd Lions Club before and after the performance. Admission was $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
— Two area men were arrested on charges of forgery for attempting to pass several bad checks at the Third Street Grocery in Tucumcari.
— The Noonday Lions donated $514 towards the purchase of intensive-care unit equipment at Dr. Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari.
— Among the prime-time television listings for Wednesday were “Kojak,” “Sonny and Cher,” “The Partridge Family” and “Cannon.”
— The Odeon Theatre was screening the western film “Santee,” starring Glenn Ford.
