Suspect in officer's killing captured

The suspect in the killing of a New Mexico State Police officer west of Tucumcari was captured Sunday morning in Albuquerque after a foot pursuit and shootout.

Jaremy Smith of South Carolina was taken into custody in Albuquerque after being shot at least once by pursuing officers. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to a Bernalillo County sheriff's officer during a news briefing shortly before noon.

A store clerk at an Albuquerque gas station spotted Smith and called police, noting he matched the description of the suspect. Smith had been the subject of an intense manhunt for more than two days.

Smith was wanted for multiple charges, including first-degree murder, after shooting and killing NMSP officer Justin Hale on Friday morning on Interstate 40 west of Tucumcari.

Hare, a Logan resident, left behind a girlfriend and two children.

Smith also is considered a person of interest in the killing of a paramedic in South Carolina. Smith reportedly was driving the paramedic's stolen car when the vehicle sustained a flat tire west of Tucumcari.

New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler also said officers would pursue charges to anyone to aided and abetted Smith, who was known to have ties to Albuquerque.
