Lady Longhorns nab district tournament title

The top-seeded Logan girls basketball team used a second-half surge Friday to conquer second-seeded Fort Sumner 58-44 and capture the district tournament title at the Lady Longhorns' gym.

The Lady Longhorns (20-7), ranked fourth in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com coming into the game, won their eighth in a row and already had won the regular-season district championship the previous week.

Camryn Cantrell scored 17 points and Desta Rose 16 to lead Logan, which outscored the Vixens 32-22 in the second half.

Logan held a 26-22 lead at intermission.

Late in the third quarter, Lizzy Horner sank a 3-pointer and Rose scored on a driving bucket to give the Lady Longhorns a 40-31 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Hailee Robertson made two 3-pointers and Horner another. Marilyn Moreno and Cantrell each scored two baskets during the period to power their team to a double-digit lead.

"Obviously, they worked really hard during the game," Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. "But they were committed to the preparation all week long in practice. We also hit some timely, clutch shots in the fourth quarter."

Robertson was about his team's preparations leading up to the game.

"We made a few adjustments to our offensive schemes to try to counter adjustments that Fort Sumner has made," he said. 'We also put extra time in our presses, finishing and doing all the little things that we preach."

Logan has played Fort Sumner five times this season, winning three of those games.

Fort Sumner, ranked second by MaxPreps.com, fell to 19-7.

The Lady Longhorns earned the No. 3 seed in the Class 1A playoffs and will play Alamo Navajo at 6 p.m. Friday in Logan. (See other story in this edition.)
