Logan girls in first place tie after Melrose win

Desta Rose and Hailee Robertson made three of four free throws late in the fourth quarter to give the Logan girls basketball team a key 59-56 district victory Saturday at Melrose.

The victory moved Logan (17-7), ranked fifth in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, into a first-place tie in the district standings with a 3-1 record.

No. 2-ranked Fort Sumner (17-5) also is 3-1 in district play. The Vixens travel to Logan for a key district matchup on Saturday.

Melrose, ranked third, fell to 18-4, 2-2. The Lady Longhorns have won two of three against the Lady Buffs this season.

Rose scored a game-high 33 points for Logan.

The Lady Longhorns had the lead for much of the game mostly because of a 13-3 run in the second quarter, giving them a 30-21 lead.

Logan led 34-30 at intermission and 46-41 after three quarters.

The Lady Longhorns’ lead was as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but two late Logan turnovers enabled Melrose to rally within 56-53 with 1:28 left.

“Late in the game, we had more turnovers than I’d like,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “It basically came to we pulled down some big rebounds late and made some huge free throws. We had good poise the last couple of minutes and took pretty good care of the rock.”

Robertson made one of two foul shots with 1:16 left, then Rose converted both free throws for a 59-53 lead with 52 seconds remaining.

Melrose damaged its chances in the final minute by going just 3-for-6 from the free throw line.

During the final 15 seconds, Rose dribbled through the defense and played keep-away from Melrose’s defenders until time expired.

Logan 74, Grady 55

Rose scored a team-high 28 points to help power the Lady Longhorns to a 74-55 district victory Thursday at Grady.

Camryn Cantrell added 15 points for Logan, and teammate Hailee Robertson scored 13.

A 9-0 run to start the third quarter gave the Lady Longhorns a double-digit lead.

Logan breezed to the win by outscoring the Bronchos 17-4 in the fourth quarter.

Grady fell to 9-11 overall and 0-4 in district play.
