1973: The Federal Energy Office today ordered fuel supplies increased to airlines and truckers, and it proposed that service station owners consider refusing to sell gasoline to motorists who already have half of tankful.
In response to the announcement, United Air Lines stated it would reinstate 36 flights that were canceled due to nationwide fuel shortages.
Refineries also were ordered to immediately furnish fuel to truck stops. The added fuel supplies were promised to independent truckers in an agreement with the government last week after a nationwide strike.
— New Mexico State Police arrested two Texas men after a routine traffic stop on eastbound Interstate 40 west of Tucumcari. The men possessed cocaine, marijuana and other dangerous drugs, plus $20,455 in cash. Federal charges against were expected.
— Gov. Bruce King said he likely would sign a bill that would lower the speed limit to 55 mph. The legislature faced a federal deadline that would have jeopardized $58 million in federal highway funds.
— A house owned by John Lowe on East Laughlin Avenue burned to the ground after a nearby grass fire grew out of control. The house was unoccupied.
— The United Department Store advertised men’s polyester slacks for $9.95, ladies polyester slacks for $4.88 to $5.88 and ladies dresses and pant sets for $6.88 to $11.88.
