Make your heart happy: Dream big

Double digits. Gavin, aka The Dad’s mini-me, is turning 10.

How. Did. That. Happen?

I remember when Gavin was born. I blinked, and now he’s 10. I have a million and one memories of this munchkin’s shenanigans in my brain. Some of my favorites are of my dad and Gavin.

We have a photo of my dad as a toddler, and Gavin as a toddler. They look identical, which makes me laugh since they acted alike as well. Just a few decades in between kiddo and ‘grrrrrrampa.’ Even though Dad isn’t physically here with us, his mini-me sure keeps us on our toes.

Gavin is a great kid, and his ‘grrrrrrampa’ would be so proud of him. I’m sure he’d have lots of life advice to share with him as well.

There are some givens, like: listen to Nana, she’s always right. Pay attention to your mom and dad. If your parents say no to a midnight taco run, call your auntie because she’ll do it.

Be kind. Throw that stuff around like glitter.

Learn from your mistakes. Never be afraid to apologize if you’ve done something wrong. Never blame someone else for your mistakes.

Read. A lot. Carry a book instead of a grudge. Books open you up to new worlds and new ideas.

Be curious, ask questions. Let curiosity guide your adventures. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t get answers that seem reasonable, ask more questions!

Dream big. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Do more of what makes your heart happy. Be grateful.

Find things that make your heart happy. Find things that bring you joy and do more of those things.

Love your people. Be sure to tell them you love them and give them loads of hugs. Every moment that we get to spend with the people we love is a gift.

And remember to be yourself. There is no one else in this world just like you.

Happy birthday, Gavin.
