1973: Hopes were high that a nationwide independent truckers’ strike would end, with the possibility of deliveries resuming by the weekend.

There were widespread reports that communities would be short of food by the weekend because of the lack of deliveries.

In the meantime, reports of violence had been reported in at least 40 states. That included a dynamite blast on one of the pillars of a bridge in Pennsylvania.

Many New Mexico housewives reportedly were overbuying supplies of toilet paper and paper towels in response to the strike.

Truckers were striking because of a sudden jump in fuel prices during a nationwide oil crisis.

— A bill to lower New Mexico’s speed limit to 55 mph sailed through the state House on a 56-6 vote and was heading to the Senate.

— The Amistad girls basketball team captured the district championship with a 37-26 win over Logan in the San Jon Sportatorium. Both teams advanced to the state tourney in Portales.

— Tucumcari Motor Co. was offering a 1970 Ford half-ton pickup with a V-8 engine and low miles for $1,695.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening the Robert Blake motorcycle movie “Electra Glide in Blue.”
