A slow start ultimately doomed the Logan girls basketball team during a 46-38 loss at district foe Fort Sumner.
The Vixens seized a 12-1 lead in the first quarter.
“We couldn’t hit shots in the first quarter,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “It put us in a hole we couldn’t get out of.”
The Lady Longhorns recovered somewhat and trailed 15-11 by intermission. The Vixens took back some of the momentum in the third quarter, taking a 25-19 lead.
Logan, with the help of a full-court press, twice rallied to within a three points with less than three minutes left but drew no closer. The Vixens responded with six unanswered points to ice the game.
“My girls played hard, though, and I was proud of their hard work and toughness,” Robertson said.
Desta Rose led Logan with 16 points, and Lizzy Horner added 11.
Fort Sumner, ranked second in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, improved to 15-4. It was the second loss Logan suffered to the Vixens in less than a week.
Logan 70, Dora 61
The Lady Longhorns broke open a close game with three 3-point shots late the fourth quarter during a 70-61 non-district victory Friday at Dora.
Horner made two 3-point shots and Marilyn Moreno one during the 11-0 run, giving Logan a double-digit lead.
Logan ended the week with a 13-7 record.
Robertson said Dora’s defense applied a lot of pressure during the game.
“We did a great job making them pay with good penetration to the paint,” he said. “We also handled the press pretty well and got some buckets in transition.”
Rose led the Lady Longhorns with 24 points, and Horner added 11.
Dora, ranked 10th in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, fell to 10-6.
Melrose JV 46, San Jon 32
The Melrose junior varsity girls prevailed 46-32 over host San Jon during a game on Jan. 23.
The Lady Buffs JV led 14-7 after the first quarter and 18-12 at halftime. They secured the win with an 18-9 third quarter.
Dakota Fisher led the Lady Coyotes with 11 points. Charlotte Graham grabbed nine rebounds.
