1973: Two state police officers stopped a vehicle 19 miles west of Tucumcari during a routine check and found 21 kilograms of marijuana.
Arrested was a 24-year-old driver from Vermont, who was jailed on $5,000 bond on a possession charge.
The marijuana’s estimated street value was $21,500. It was the second large pot bust in the area in a week.
— A tire broke loose from a westbound truck from Arkansas and smashed through a window at Sylvia Anthony’s Cafe on East Tucumcari Boulevard. It damaged several tables, chairs, glasses and dishes. The incident happened at 4 a.m., when the restaurant was closed. No injuries were reported.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening “Gator Bait,” starring Playboy Playmate of the Year Claudia Jennings. Coming next was a documentary nature film, “Vanishing Wilderness,” that stated: “See it … before civilization sweeps it away.”
— Gibson’s Discount Center was offering a quarter of Listerine mouthwash for $1.19, a king-size box of Tide detergent for $1.09, 25 tablets of Alka Seltzer for 77 cents and quart Thermos bottle with a handle for $1.67.
