Lady Buffs rally to edge Logan in final

Melrose held the Logan girls basketball team scoreless in the final four minutes, enabling the Lady Buffs to notch a 44-43 comeback victory Saturday in the finals of the 66th annual Plateau-EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

The Lady Longhorns led by as much as 12 and still held a 43-36 advantage with 4:09 left after Camryn Cantrell made a free throw.

Melrose senior guard Graci Odom scored six of her team-high 18 points in the final four minutes, including the eventual game-winner on a slashing move with 43 seconds left.

Logan coach Dustin Robertson indicated he saw a lack of aggressiveness from his team late in the game.

"They were the aggressors," he said of Melrose. "We seemed to simply just try and hold on instead of keeping our foot on the throttle."

Logan still had a chance to win it with 15 seconds left after a steal. But Desta Rose's 3-point attempt from the top of the key missed.

Lizzy Horner led the Lady Longhorns with 13 points, and Rose added 12.

The game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter, and the Lady Longhorns took the upper hand in the second period and led 24-16 at intermission.

Melrose, the top seed at the tournament, improved to 12-2. Logan, a third seed, fell to 10-5.

Logan 37, Fort Sumner 27

The Lady Longhorns outscored the second-seeded Vixens 18-7 in the fourth quarter to seal a 37-27 victory Friday in the semifinals of the EPAC tourney.

Logan coach Dustin Robertson said Lizzy Horner, who scored a game-high 20 points, led the charge early in the final period.

"When Liz hit the three and got fouled from the right wing, that sent our bench into a frenzy," he said. "Desta (Rose) and Hailee (Robertson) got a few steals not long after that; in my opinion those steals sealed the deal. Our defense was good most of the game."

He also credited the strong rebounding of Camryn Cantrell, Laramee Shields and Presley Griffitt for the victory.

Fort Sumner fell to 9-4.

Logan 68, Grady 42

The Lady Longhorns took a 13-2 early lead to set the tone for a 68-42 victory Thursday against sixth-seeded Grady in the first round of the EPAC tourney.

Logan led 20-8 after the first quarter and 41-20 at halftime.

Camryn Cantrell scored 20 points to lead Logan, and Desta Rose added 16. Marilyn Moreno and Liz Horner each scored 10.

Grady fell to 5-5.
