1974: Legislation aimed at lowering New Mexico’s speed limit to 55 mph appeared in the state legislature.
The speed-limit bill, introduced in the House, was requested by Gov. Bruce King during his message to the legislature on the opening day of its session.
King requested the bill to bring New Mexico into compliance with federal energy-conservation directives.
The county was in the midst of an ongoing energy crunch, with widespread gasoline shortages.
— New Mexico State Police confiscated more than 220 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $110,000, from the trunk of a car driven by an Oklahoma man. The driver had been stopped for speeding 12 miles west of Tucumcari and was booked into the Quay County Jail.
— A robbery was reported at the Town House Motel in Tucumcari. The robber held a long-barreled gun and told the clerk to “give me everything in the cash register, fast.” About $200 was taken.
— Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, former stars for the New York Yankees, were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was the first year of eligibility for Mantle, who hit 536 home runs in his career. Ford won 236 games in his career with a winning percentage of .690.
