1974: Undeterred by freezing temperatures and icy streets, U.S. Rep. Manuel Lujan Jr. arrived at the Quay County Courthouse to hold regular congressional hours.
A line of residents had formed in the courthouse halls awaiting his arrival, with each seeking an appointment to talk to the congressman.
Lujan parked in the lot behind the courthouse, entered through a back door and was greeted by Sheriff Francis Isler, deputy James Knight and Assistant District Attorney Pete Bidwell.
Lujan was questioned about the ongoing energy crisis and the prospect of possible impeachment of President Richard Nixon over the Watergate scandal.
— During Dick Cavett’s taped interview on ABC with new Vice President Gerald Ford and his family, Ford’s wife Betty said it was “inconceivable” to consider the possibility of living in the White House.
“None of us talk about it or think about it,” she said.
Ford would become president later in the year after Nixon’s resignation.
— White’s store in Tucumcari was advertising steel-belted radial tires ranging from $27.47 to $44.99.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening “Mary Poppins,” starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
