1973: In Charlene Reid’s column, she told of the late Mattie L. McKinnon, who before 1915 made a quilt from dozens of small flannel flags representing states and countries around the world.
Each flannel was stitched together by McKinnon when she was a seamstress. Reid said the quilt, backed with red plaid flannel, is so thick it would “eliminate the use of two or three blankets nowadays.” She said the quilt was a collector’s item.
Carefully folded and put away, the quilt was stored in the home for many years of C.P. McKinnon, who recently died and was buried in Tucumcari.
The McKinnons’ son, John, soon will give the quilt to his daughter, Mrs. W.G. Gagnon of Denver.
