Publisher's journal: This David Stevens not the Rocketeer

Have you ever Googled yourself?

Mostly you don’t find yourself.

David Stevens has over 35 years of experience in the mortgage banking industry.

David Stevens is an American politician and a former Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives.

Highly skilled 168-pounder David Stevens scored a wild last-second KO of Sean Hemphill in January.

None of those David Stevens are me.

There’s a David Stevens on a wrestling roster, a David Stevens on a football roster, a lawyer named David Stevens who specializes in bankruptcy, a David Stevens who is a professor of medicine at Stanford University, and an employment litigator named David Stevens.

Also not me.

I scrolled through more than 1,000 Google listings for David Stevens. Some of those David Stevens’ were writers and journalists, but none of them were me.

A link to David Stevens’ dating history caused concern, but that David Stevens dated and was married to Alice Roberts, a British TV personality. I would never date or marry a British TV personality.

Finally I found a reference to David Stevens being on Facebook. That could have been me. But that David Stevens lived in Macon, Ga., and studied business at Crandall Junior College. He mostly posts pictures of lost dogs.

Nope. Not me.

I was hoping “Brush with Passion: The art and life of Dave Stevens” might be about me. It wasn’t.

A David Stevens was arrested after tripping a silent alarm inside Ernie’s Coffee Shop near Lake Tahoe in Nevada. A David Stevens murdered a woman in a parking lot in Fargo, N.D., and people who knew him said they weren’t surprised he’d do such a thing. There’s a story about a fellow who murdered David Stevens. I learned “David Stevens’ murder was a tragedy with deafening echoes,” which I was glad to know.

But none of those David Stevens turned out to be me either.

The Rev. David Stevens died recently. So did David Stevens who was a businessman, lifelong golfer and Duke basketball fan. Another David Stevens died while jogging. Definitely not me.

Did you know David Stevens was an American illustrator and comics artist best known for creating The Rocketeer comic book? There’s even a documentary about his life. No one has ever made a documentary about me.

I am not the Boston-based saxophonist, I don’t specialize in orthopedic surgery and I don’t manage a ceramics program and studio in Oklahoma.

But if you keep going, you will eventually find the real David Stevens. He is the author of a regular feature in The Eastern New Mexico News called Pages Past. He reported that in 1947, yeggmen got away with $800 to $900 cash from the Campbell Dairy and Ice Cream Co. plant in Clovis.

If Pages Past is my Google legacy, I’m fine with that.
