1973: Dan Barks, the city’s parks and recreation director, will attempt to walk for 50 consecutive hours starting on Oct. 1 in and between Tucumcari’s parks.
Barks’ endeavor will serve as a fundraiser for recreational facilities in the city and was a training session for a future bid for a world record.
He will begin his trek from Eastside Park to Northside Park, then to Damon Kvols Park, Dunn Park, Wailes Park and finishing at Eastside Park.
— Local and state police were looking for a vehicles with four suspects after a robbery at the Flying V Motel in San Jon. They threw a blanket over the motel manager’s head and tied him up with a lamp cord while taking $40 to $50 in cash.
— Southwest Motors in Tucumcari was advertising these new 1974 models: Ford Mustang II, Ford Torino, Ford LTD, Mercury Cougar XR-7, Mercury Marquis Brougham and Mercury Comet.
— New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays, 42, announced he was ending his storied baseball career at the end of the season after 22 years. He was making $165,000 a year and would earn $50,000 annually through age 50 under the terms of his contract.
