1973: About 40 to 45 local gas station operators elected a committee to travel to Clovis, Albuquerque and Santa Rosa to persuade operators to join their shutdown to protest President Nixon’s fuel price-controls program.

Local operators opted to remain closed through 9 a.m. Friday, when they will meet at the chamber of commerce to discuss further action.

San Jon also had shut down all its stations except for the truck terminal there.

In Tucumcari, Malco, Texaco, Circle K, Shamrock, Alex, Phillips 66, Standard and Bell stations still were selling fuel. Stations also remained open in Glenrio, Endee, Palomas, Logan and Montoya.

— John Goodman, secretary-treasurer of the National Association of Postmasters in Illinois, wrote in appreciation of the thoughtfulness and honesty of a local restaurant.

Goodman’s son, Larry, was out of Navy boot camp and traveling through Tucumcari when he left his wallet in the men’s room at the Y Cafe. The restaurant forwarded his wallet with all his identifications and cash intact.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening a new Clint Eastwood western, “High Plains Drifter.”
