Menaul rallies over Logan in second half

Menaul scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to surge to a 24-6 non-district victory over visiting Logan in eight-man football action Friday.

The Longhorns committed six turnovers during the game, compared to one for the Panthers. Logan lost three fumbles, two onside kicks and one interception. Menial committed one turnover.

“You can’t have as many turnovers as we had and expect to come out on top,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said.

With the game tied 6-6 after intermission, Logan drove to Menaul’s 6-yard line but lost possession on an interception. The Panthers took advantage, driving down the field for a touchdown and a 12-6 lead.

Menaul tried an onside kick after the TD and recovered the ball. The Panthers scored again on that possession to make it 18-6.

The Panthers successfully executed another onside kick after the score, though they didn’t score on that series.

“We didn’t have the ball the rest of the third quarter,” Roberts said. “We played defense probably 80% of the night.”

The Longhorns notched its only score during the first half when Devin Kotara returned a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown.

Logan, suffering its first loss of the season, fell to 2-1. The Longhorns were ranked fourth in the state in to the Aug. 29 coaches poll.

Menaul, ranked ninth in the coaches poll, improved to 2-0.

Logan faces another non-district foe at 7 p.m. Friday with visiting Magdalena (1-2).

Melrose, a district opponent for Logan, overwhelmed the visiting Steers 54-0 on Friday night.
