1973: The Tucumcari News was told the waters of the Municipal Pool at Five Mile Park, after being in “deplorable” condition, were “crystal clear and very inviting” — the best it had been all summer.
The newspaper reported previous problems at the pool with the filtering system and chlorinator. Some painting and cleanup still were needed in the building that houses dressing rooms.
The newspaper estimated a new pool would take $200,000 “to even begin, and it would not be anywhere near the size of the one we have.”
It estimated that Municipal Pool would require about $50,000 in repairs.
— The Tucumcari Urban Development Agency accepted a low bid of $414,174.50 from Kachina Contractors of Albuquerque for the Tucumcari downtown mall. Work was expected to begin in about three weeks.
— Roy’s Meat Market reported a theft of a 250-pound half-beef valued at $200, a box of pork loins valued at $95, a square-cut chuck valued at $80, eight cases of lunch meat valued at $80, two cases of Coke and two slabs of bacon valued at $22, two boxes of candy valued at $18 and 12-inch steak knife valued at $12.
— Because of a rash of thefts, District Attorney Norman Runyan recommended that residents mark their items with their Social Security numbers to help law enforcement trace and return them.
— White’s store in Tucumcari was advertising over 1,000 close-out items, including 8-track stereo tapes for $2.99 each.
— Atlanta Braves outfielder Hank Aaron hit his 705th career home run, moving within 10 of breaking Babe Ruth’s record of 715. The homer came during a 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
